2024 elections: the MR list for the Europeans is completed, Sophie Wilmès in pole position, Olivier Chastel will be number 2

As a reminder, the former Prime Minister had wanted to take the lead in this list after Charles Michel had given up running for the elections. The President of the European Council, under fire from national and international criticism, ultimately chose not to shorten his prestigious mandate.

Following this twist, the MR found itself without head of list for the European Parliament. Sophie Wilmès, who was expected to lead the blues in the Brussels federal constituency, then changed her tune and demanded Europe. After a standoff of several weeks with Georges-Louis Bouchez, the president of the MR, she obtained satisfaction. In the great liberal carousel, Sophie Wilmès was then replaced on the federal list by the former Minister of Higher Education, Valérie Glatigny.

White smoke at the MR: Valérie Glatigny will be head of the list for the federal government in Brussels, Sophie Wilmès will draw the list to Europe

Benoît Cassart: the return to MR

Who are the personalities who will accompany Sophie Wilmès in the electoral battle? Olivier Chastel, former president of the MR and MEP, occupies second place. He should thus obtain a new European parliamentary mandate.

In third position, the Liberals recruited Benoît Cassart. In 2019, this Condruzian breeder moved from MR to Défi, from which he even made the European list. Now he is back at MR…

Praised by Sophie Wilmès during Monday’s press conference, the Namur alderwoman, ex-MP and ex-senator Anne Barzin, will push the list.

A place of choice: the first deputy will be the Uccle alderman for Urban Planning and Housing, Jonathan Biermann, also a lawyer. Finally, as expected, Frédérique Ries does not appear on the list. The former RTL news presenter will therefore leave the European Parliament at the end of the legislature.

Elections: “There is a very tough fight going on between Wilmès and Bouchez”

As already indicated in our columns, the MR places Sophie Wilmès at the top of the European list with the aim of leveraging her great popularity in a wider constituency (the Wallonia-Brussels Federation). However, the former head of the federal government has expressed internally her desire to remain involved in politics at the Belgian level after June 9. As long as the MR is associated, it will also play a central role in the discussions with a view to the formation of new majorities.
