The first vehicle hit burst into flames immediately, leaving its driver no chance. The cabin of the semi-trailer was completely torn off and thrown a few meters away. The other truck overturned and all passage over the Walloon ridge has been compromised since Monday morning. Traffic congestion which adds to the various events in the agricultural sector.
Firefighters from the NAGE zone and those from the Val de Sambre zone went to the scene with significant resources: two pumpers, three tanks, an extrication vehicle, four ambulances and the Auvelais SMUR.
When they arrive, the situation is dramatic. “In thirty years of career, I have never seen this”, testifies a firefighter. The firefighters had to evolve on two fronts: contain the fire in the truck from the car and extricate the injured drivers from the vehicles involved. “The person in the car crushed by the truck was unfortunately dead, there is nothing we can do to save them”continues the firefighter.
It appears that the victim is a young girl, in her twenties. In total, five other injuries were reported. Four were dispatched to Namur hospitals, one in serious condition was sent to the Marie Curie clinic in Lodelinsart.
The Daussoulx WPR police officers immediately took the decision to close the motorway in both directions, which caused endless queues on the roads between Spy and Namur.
To understand the circumstances of this dramatic pileup, the Namur public prosecutor’s office sent an expert to the scene.
Several hypotheses are put forward: speed, a slowdown caused by a demonstration downstream, or the distraction of one of the drivers. DVI investigators also went down to identify the victim. Vehicles will be cleared during the day.
