At least 11 dead, most of them students, in a bus crash in Indonesia

At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured, most of them students, after a bus plowed into several cars and motorcycles due to apparent brake failure in the Indonesian province of East Java, authorities said Sunday.

The bus was carrying 61 students and teachers back to a high school in Depok on the outskirts of Jakarta, the capital, from the hillside resort of Bandung after a graduation celebration on Saturday, a West Java police spokesman said. Jules Abraham Abast.

The vehicle went out of control on a road leading down from the hills and crossed into the oncoming lane, where it struck several cars and motorcycles before crashing into a utility pole, he said.

Nine people died at the scene and two others died later in the hospital, including a teacher and a local motorcyclist, Abast said. Another 53 people were hospitalized with injuries, some in critical condition.

“We continue to investigate the cause of the accident, but a preliminary investigation showed that the bus’s brakes failed,” Abast said.

Images from a local television station showed the battered bus in the dark, turned on its side and surrounded by rescuers, police and witnesses while several ambulances evacuated the injured.

Traffic accidents are common in Indonesia due to the poor state of infrastructure and poor compliance with safety regulations.

Last year, at least 14 people were killed and 19 injured when a tour bus with an apparently sleepy driver crashed into a billboard on an East Java highway. In 2021, another tourist bus fell off a cliff in the mountain resort of Puncak due to apparent brake failure, an accident that left at least 27 dead and 39 injured.
