Blinken says at democracy summit that technology must support democratic values

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed the need to ensure that technologies support democratic values, telling a democracy summit on Monday that authoritarian regimes use them to undermine democracy and human rights.

Blinken spoke at a ministerial conference at the third Democracy Summit, a US-led initiative being held this year in Seoul, South Korea.

“Revitalizing democracy will also require us to shape the technological future that is inclusive and rights-respecting, aimed at driving progress in people’s lives,” Blinken said.

“As authoritarian and repressive regimes deploy technologies to undermine democracy and human rights, we must ensure that technology maintains and supports democratic values and norms,” he said.

US President Joe Biden first proposed hosting a democracy summit during his 2020 campaign, and has called for the United States and its like-minded allies to show the world that democracies serve societies better than autocracies.

Also on Monday, Blinken met with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-vul and President Yoon Suk Yeol to discuss North Korea and the alliance between Washington and Seoul, according to the South Korean government.
