For NATO, peace will be at stake in Ukraine

On April 4, 1949, twelve countries, including Belgium, signed the birth certificate of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Today, this Collective Defense Alliance remains “the strongest and most successful in history”, declared its secretary general Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday during the birthday party in Brussels. Seventy-five years of NATO’s existence are years of peace within the founding States, joined by twenty other countries in search of this same privilege. NATO has preserved the security of its members so well that some people once thought they could do without it. The Russian invasion of Ukraine dispelled the Western illusion that the war is a matter of the past or someone else. The Alliance has regained all its meaning. Not all of his wits yet.
