In the evolving landscape of social media platforms, the term shadow ban is emerging as a controversial practice implemented by these companies.
This practice is in contrast to traditional bans or suspensions, in which a user is publicly denied access to a platform or their content is removed. Partial blocking is hidden as the account holder discovers that he or she is speaking to an “empty room.”
Although what the management of social media companies such as Meta declares is that the motive behind the partial blocking is to reduce hate speech, harassment, misinformation, and other disturbing content. However, it has drawn criticism for its lack of transparency and potential for abuse.
