Helio Flores announces his retirement; he will stop publishing his cartoons

MEXICO CITY (apro).-Monero Helio Flores announced his retirement due to the “physical conditions” of his age. The caricaturist, one of the greatest exponents of the genre, began his caricaturing career in 1959.

“Dear friends and readers: I inform you that starting today I will stop publishing my cartoons. I have made the difficult decision to retire because the physical conditions typical of my age have diminished my abilities to do my work with the quality that you deserve “I thank my colleagues at the newspaper and its director Lic. Juan Francisco Ealy Ortiz for their tolerance; and in a very special way to those who have generously followed my work for more than 60 years, 52 of them in this medium. Thank you, thank you very much.” , the cartoonist announced in his cartoon published in El Universal.

The farewell card.

In 2017, prior to receiving the Gabriel Vargas Cartoon Recognition, he told Reyes Martínez Torrijos in an interview for The Day: “The genre of caricature in journalism has always been important. That same year he would say: “I was a kid when I started making cartoons and I saw the cartoons of “Rius”, they caught my attention because of their opposition, because at that time the majority of cartoonists made cartoons to please people.”

Flores received awards in Cuba, Bulgaria and Canada and worked in The hen, The Xalapa Diary, The Illustrated Mitote, The Tick, News, Always!, The Day and The universal.

In 1971 and 1988 he won the Grand Prix at the International Cartoon Show in Montreal, Canada.
