‘I wanted to bat till the end but…’ Kolkata captain Shreyas Iyer explains the reason for the loss to Rajasthan

Mumbai. Rajasthan Royals defeated two-time champion team Kolkata Knight Riders in the last over on Monday in a very exciting IPL match. Kolkata captain Shreyas Iyer said after the loss to Rajasthan at the Brabourne Stadium that his team started well chasing the target but could not maintain the momentum which had to bear the brunt. Rajasthan scored 217 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs, after which Kolkata team was out for 210 runs in 19.4 overs.

Chasing the target of 218 runs from the Royals, the team of Knight Riders in front of the spin magic of Chahal (5 for 40) Shreyas (85 runs in 51 balls, seven fours, four sixes) and Aaron Finch (28 balls) 58 runs, nine fours, two sixes) was reduced to 210 runs in 19.4 overs despite the second wicket partnership of 107 runs.

Earlier, the Royals had Jos Buttler’s 103 from 61 balls with 5 sixes and 9 fours, 97 for the first wicket with Devdutt Padikkal (24) and 67 runs for the second wicket with captain Sanju Samson (38). 217 runs were made for five wickets.

Iyer said after the match, ‘We were scoring runs at a good run rate from the beginning, thanks to Finch. We haven’t been able to maintain that momentum but it’s part of the game. I wanted to bat till the end but Yuji (Chahal) changed the course.

He said, ‘Jos (Buttler) had a slow start but after that he scored fast and played a great innings. Looking at the conditions, there was no dew and the wicket was great to bat on. This ground has not been good for us but we would like to come back positive.
