Forming a new government and dissolving the National Assembly… What is happening in Kuwait?

The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, issued an Emiri decree on Sunday, forming the ninth government in the country in four years.

The official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported that the decree was issued with the formation of the new government headed by Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and including 13 ministers.

The change included four portfolios: Justice and Endowments, Social Affairs, Family Affairs, Childhood and Youth Affairs, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in addition to the Ministry of Electricity, Water, Renewable Energy and Housing.

Kuwait has been experiencing successive crises for years due to ongoing disputes and conflicts between the governments appointed by the Emir and the councils elected directly by the people.

Kuwait is the only Arab country among the Gulf states that has a democratically elected parliament that has the right to monitor and hold the government accountable. But in return, the Emir of the country has the right to choose the head of government, and he can dissolve the elected House of Representatives whenever he wants.
