McDonald’s’ surprise decision to reclaim ownership of its branches in Israel has put Alonial franchise owner and CEO Omri Badan in the spotlight.

McDonald’s will buy back all of its Israeli restaurants after the company’s global sales declined due to its boycott by many, due to its clear support for Israel in the Gaza war.

The fast food giant uses a “franchise” system, which means that individual operators from outside the company obtain a license to operate branches and employ employees. But the parent company came under criticism after Badan offered free meals to Israeli forces at the beginning of the Gaza war.

The boycott began after Arab countries and others with a Muslim majority, such as Kuwait, Malaysia, and Pakistan, issued statements announcing a boycott of the company because of what they considered to be clear support by the company for Israel.
