Ofelia Hernández Salas, alias “La Lupe” or “Doña Lupe””, was handed over to the United States authorities, by virtue of an extradition order to face charges for the crime of human trafficking presented in the District of Arizona.
According to the United States Department of Justice, “Doña Lupe” is linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and operated in Mexicali as part of a group that is dedicated to human smuggling.

Nicole M. Argentieri, Deputy Attorney General of the Criminal Division of the Department of Justiceexplained that the extradition process was successfully achieved thanks to “coordination between the Department of Justice and our Mexican law enforcement partners to bring to justice human smugglers who take advantage of the desperate situation of migrants and undermine the rule of law.”
According to official documents, Ofelia Hernández Salas “Doña Lupe” was supposedly in coordination with other human traffickers, who facilitated the entry of migrants into the United States coming from Bangladesh, Yemen, Pakistan, Eritrea, India, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Russia, Egypt, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and other countries.
