MSF denounces interference by the Libyan coast guard in a rescue operation in international waters

Doctors Without Borders has denounced this Saturday that the Libyan coast guard is interfering in a rescue operation that its ship ‘Geo Barents’ is trying to carry out in international waters of the central Mediterranean. “We were carrying out a rescue operation on a wooden boat with more than a hundred people on board, including many women and children. During this operation, a Libyan patrol boat approached and began to carry out dangerous maneuvers that prevented the approach of the rescue boats,” said the MSF rescue manager on board the ship, Fulvia Conte. Conte, in a later update, indicated that the patrol boat has finally withdrawn, and the organization has been able to rescue the migrants. The humanitarian aid worker identified the Libyan ship as the LCG 602 patrol boat. “We have spent two hours negotiating in a very complicated situation for both the people on the barge and our teams,” lamented the spokesperson, who recalled that the collision has occurred in international waters and that the ‘Geo Barents’ is capable of carrying out the rescue. Also in the last few hours, MSF has reported that the Maltese coast guard has pushed a boat with more than a hundred people on board towards Libya. “The ‘Geo Barents’ was willing to collaborate but (…) the Maltese authorities coordinated the movement of the vessel to Libya, which is not a safe place,” the NGO said.
