National Hispanic Heritage Month highlights cultural diversity of Latinos in the US

History and culture Hispanic occupy a central place throughout the United States during the National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15. The celebration recognizes the contributions of Hispanic Americans, the fastest growing racial or ethnic minority group, according to the Census.

Includes people whose ancestors come from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.

With a US population of more than 63 million people, there will be a lots of celebrations of National Hispanic Heritage Month across the country starting Friday.

HOW DID IT COME UP?

Before National Hispanic Heritage Month, there was the Hispanic Heritage Weekcreated through legislation sponsored by Mexican-American Congressman Edward R. Roybal of Los Angeles, and signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. The annual celebration would take place the week that included the 15 and September 16.

That week-long commemoration was expanded to a month two decades later, with a law signed into law by then-president Ronald Reagan.

September 15 was chosen as the starting point to coincide with the anniversary of the “Cry of Dolores”—emitted in 1810 from a town in central Mexico and which gave rise to the beginning of that country’s War of Independence from Spain.

The Central American nations of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica celebrate their independence on September 15and Mexico celebrates its national day on September 16, one day after the Cry of Independence.

The South American nation of Chili celebrates its Independence Day on September 18, also during National Hispanic Heritage Month. He Indigenous Peoples Dayformerly known as Columbus Day or Columbus Day, is celebrated in the United States on the second Monday in October.
