Orphan Natalia Grace confronts her adoptive father in documentary

dFor years, Natalia Grace’s adoptive parents accused her of “posing” as a girl who, according to them, was actually a murderous “sociopath” who intended to destroy her family.

The curious case of the Ukrainian orphan has captivated the world. She was adopted in 2010 by Michael and Kristine Barnett, who later asked a judge to change her legal age from eight to 22, citing chilling “evidence” they said showed she was considerably older.

Natalia had to defend herself against those egregious accusations for years and now she is sharing her side of the story. In the series, she comes face to face with her adoptive father. It turns out to be an explosive meeting in which she finally gets the chance to ask him everything she’s wanted to know for years.

The latest in this turbulent family saga will be seen in the six-episode docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speakswhich will premiere for three consecutive nights on Investigation Discovery beginning January 1, each night from 9 to 11 pm ET.

Natalia, who claims that “her childhood was taken away from her.” Plus, she addresses some of the wild accusations that have been made against her, like trying to kill her adoptive family.

“They are not going to get away with this,” says Natalia in the docuseries. “This is my version of the events. “Do I look like a monster to you?”

Natalia believes the Barnetts’ lies are confirmed when she finally gets medical confirmation about her age in the first episode.

Dr. Halland Chen explains in the documentary that they performed DNA testing at TruDiagnostic, which relied on a sample of her blood to determine Grace’s “chronological age.” They concluded that she was “approximately 22 years old” at the time. Indeed, they noted that she was “pretty close” to what she thought, meaning that she was approximately 20 years old. It is a difference of just two years.”

“As long as I can remember, I always knew I was a girl,” says Natalia, bursting into tears after receiving the results. “I just want people to know my real age.”

The truth is that he is considerably younger than 34. That’s how old he would be now based on his 1989 birth date, which the Barnetts legally changed. It means she was four years old when she came to the United States from Ukraine and was only eight years old when the Barnetts legally changed her age and moved to Canada, leaving her alone in a Lafayette apartment.

“This little piece of paper puts an end to all the Barnett lies. It is very significant. These two people have been lying to death for 12 years. “They ruined a girl’s life,” explained Natalia, upon receiving the results.

“They painted me as a monster, when in reality it was them. This shows that I didn’t lie about my age. They ignored all the evidence, just so they could support this stupid lie. “They knew it and they still did what they did.”

The docuseries also returns to the clinic of a dentist who saw Natalia more than a decade ago. The dentist presented an x-ray and noted that what he showed was “irrefutable” proof: adult teeth growing in the gums beneath Natalia’s baby teeth.

“You can’t pretend that teeth are coming in like that,” says the dentist in the docuseries. He clarifies that the x-ray was performed in 2011 and that Natalia was about eight or nine years old at the time.

Natalia remembered that visit to the dentist after her tooth fell out while she was living with the Barnett family. She claimed that her adoptive mother Kristine had accused her of pulling out her tooth herself.

But Natalia was still not clear about the reasons why the Barnetts decided to convince everyone that she was much older than she was.

“I always knew that I was not an adult,” Natalia added. “They are hiding something significant. “I want to know the answers to these questions and I want people to pay for what they have done.”

The interview, which will air on New Year’s Day, is the first time in years that Natalia and her adoptive father, Michael Barnett, have seen each other face to face outside of a courtroom.

“Why are we here, Michael?” Natalia asks.

“Why are we here?” Michael responds. “If this is a philosophical question…”

“No, I want to know why you adopted me in the first place?” Natalia asks.

Michael claimed that he was also a victim and that he was manipulated and abused by Kristine, who is now his ex-wife.

“Many of these questions are not going to have a single answer,” he explained.

“Is not easy. I was facing the same monster as you. Kristine. He controlled me, belittled me, threatened me and treated me badly. “She shut down the person I was and manipulated me into being the person she wanted me to be.”

Despite the trauma the two seem to have gone through, Natalia later states that she still believes Michael is guilty, “because he stood by and did nothing.”

“If Kristine was a supposed monster, he could have fought her. I wasn’t capable,” he later confesses to the camera.

When she asks if he was aware of the alleged abuse, Michael admits that he was aware of some and becomes emotional. He claims that he couldn’t do anything because Kristine threatened that he would never see her children again.

Natalia admitted in the docuseries that, when she lived with the Barnetts, she told people she was 22 years old, out of fear.

“When Kristine told me to tell people she was 22, I did it because I was terrified,” she explained, recounting how she was repeatedly beaten with a belt and forced to stand against a wall for hours, urinating on herself. “I didn’t know what she was going to do to me.”

During the interview, Natalia also fired questions at Michael and refuted his previous claims about her, including that he had a knife in his hand when he leaned over the bed where he and his wife were sleeping.

“I was never in your room with a knife,” Natalia exclaims with her head in her hands.

“I know what I saw,” he replies.

Who is Natalia Grace?

When Natalia, who suffers from congenital spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, a rare genetic disorder, was adopted by the Barnetts in 2010 through an agency, the couple was told she was then six years old.

But the couple had doubts and later cited “evidence” showing he was older.

However, when Kristine tried to bathe her new daughter, she was surprised to see that she had pubic hair. According to her adoptive mother, shortly afterward, she discovered that Natalia had hidden her menstrual cycle from her.

When Natalia was adopted by the Barnetts in 2010 through an agency, the couple was informed that she was six years old at the time. However, they believed that she was much older.

The Barnetts discovered that another girl with the same rare form of dwarfism also lived in Indiana, and the parents arranged a visit so the two girls could meet, become friends and support each other.

Michael Barnett says he was immediately surprised that Natalia looked much older than the other girl. He insisted that his adopted daughter also noticed the difference at the time and recalls that she quickly tried to look younger.

Over the next few months, what began as a question about Natalia’s true age quickly became a maelstrom of accusations, with the Barnetts claiming that their adopted daughter was actually a homicidal adult.

Natalia’s adoptive mother, Kristine, who could not be reached by ID producers for the docuseries, told DailyMail.com in 2019 that her family was terrorized in the months after the adoption.

She alleged that Natalia threatened to stab the family while they slept, pushed them into an electric fence and poured bleach into their coffee.

When I asked her what she was doing, Natalia responded: “I’m trying to poison you.”

In the new docuseries, Natalia defends herself against accusations that, according to her, are blatantly taken from the thriller film The orphan2009.

“I never tried to murder anyone,” he said.

In 2019, the Barnetts were arrested on child neglect charges after they abandoned Natalia in an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana, and moved to Canada.

Michael was acquitted of the charges in October 2022, while Kristine’s case was dismissed in March 2023, just three weeks before her trial. They have been divorced since 2013.

Where is Natalia Grace today?

Natalia lives with her guardians Cynthia and Antwon Mans and their children in Indiana.

They celebrated Natalia’s 20th birthday in September 2023.

The couple has advocated for Natalia and her disability and, in 2019, they attended the program Dr Phil with Natalia and maintained that he never showed signs of violence towards his family.

In June 2023, they launched a GoFundMe to raise money for a wheelchair accessible van.

Cynthia Mans claimed that Michael “smiled” at her when he was found innocent at his trial.

“It was like they raped my daughter,” Mans says in the documentary. “Justice was not done. If I had met Kristine in an alley, she would have put a black hoodie on me and I would have punched her in the head.”

Natalia has denied all accusations of murderous intent and aggressive behavior.

“They were supposed to take care of me. But all they did was hurt me.”
