Portugal’s socialist leader hopes Montenegro will present “a stable government solution”

The leader of the Socialist Party (PS) of Portugal, Pedro Nuno, stated this Tuesday that he hopes that the candidate of the Democratic Alliance (AD), the conservative Luis Montenegro, will deliver to the country’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “a solution of stable government”, stressing that his party will be in charge of leading the opposition. “What is expected is the leader of the coalition to present a stable government solution tomorrow. The country needs a strong and stable government, as well as a stable, strong and solid opposition. That is what we will be,” he declared after finishing the hearing with Rebelo de Sousa in the Belén Palace. Nuno has indicated that he does not expect “any profound change” in the count of votes sent from abroad in the parliamentary elections, which left a provisional difference of two seats between the conservative coalition led by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the PS. currently in power. “That is why we arrived at this hearing with the president without a government solution supported by a majority. The most relevant fact is that the country needs a stable government and the PS does not have a majority to propose it,” he stressed. Likewise, the socialist leader recalled that, after recognizing his defeat, Montenegro gave a speech in which he presented himself “not only as a winner, but with the expectation of being nominated to form a government.” “The leader of the PSD and potential prime minister must ask for the necessary governance conditions that the country needs,” he said. Although the conservative alliance, led by Montenegro, received the most votes in the legislative elections of March 10, none of the formations has achieved an absolute majority in the Assembly, so a minority government is planned unless AD ends up by make an agreement with the far-right Chega party, which achieved unprecedented support.
