The Haryana government has approved the new liquor (excise) policy of the state. The new excise policy for 2024-25 was approved in the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini here on Wednesday. The state government had taken permission from the Election Commission for the approval of the excise policy. The Commission had given consent to the government to approve the policy with conditions. Due to the conditions of the Commission, not much change has been made in the old policy.

The old policy was till May 12. In such a situation, the new policy will come into effect from this day itself. This policy will remain in force till May 11, 2025. There has been no increase in the number of liquor vends in the state. The number of contracts will remain the same 2400 as before. The quota of country liquor has been increased. On the lines of liquor made in Haryana and India, now foreign liquor will also come under the purview of track and tracing system. Due to the earlier controversy over selling liquor in glass bottles only, the cabinet has kept both types of options. That means both glass and plastic bottles can be used. The government has made it clear in the excise policy that flow meters will have to be compulsorily installed in liquor distilleries by July 31. The opening timings of the shops in the villages will be from 8 am to 11 pm during April to October. The contracts will remain open from 8 am to 10 pm from November to March. Whereas in urban areas, liquor vends will be open from 8 am to 12 midnight.

The Election Commission has given approval to the government to implement the excise policy with the condition that it will not be publicized in any way. The government has been told bluntly that it will not be publicized for political gains. The e-trading process for allotment of new contracts will also start on May 25 i.e. after voting. However, before this the department will be able to start its preparations.
