US Central Command forces confirmed an attack on its Burj 22 military air base in northeastern Jordan, killing three American soldiers and wounding 34 others.
The names of the soldiers killed or injured have not been announced, as US officials are notifying their families.
Jordan had denied that the attack had occurred on its territory, and the official government spokesman, Muhannad Moubaidin, said that the attack occurred inside Syrian territory near the kingdom’s borders.
The BBC confirmed the locations of these bases via satellite images, as the Burj 22 base is located in the Rukban area, northeastern Jordan, near the Jordanian-Syrian border.
This base contains – according to satellite images – more than 70 buildings, and does not contain an air strip, but the latest high-resolution images available to us show places to host at least nine helicopters, and in satellite images dating from the period between June June to October 2023 Seven aircraft can be seen.
Due to the location’s distance from residential areas and its military nature, no photos or videos of it have yet been available on social media.
Who is behind this attack?
Until now, several parties are exchanging accusations and denials.
The United States accused Iranian-backed armed groups of carrying out the attack, and President Joe Biden stressed that he would “retaliate.”
The Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, which are loyal to Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack, in addition to announcing the targeting of three other American military bases, two of which are inside Syria, namely the Shadadi base and the Tanf base, and also an Israeli oil facility in the Mediterranean Sea, according to a statement issued by them in the wake of the attacks. .
The Iraqi government condemned the attack and called for an “end to the cycle of violence” in the Middle East. It expressed its readiness “to cooperate in establishing rules to prevent further repercussions in the region and to limit the escalation of the conflict.”
But Iran denied that it had anything to do with the attack on the American base, and stated that it did not participate in “resistance groups’ decision-making,” or how they chose to “defend the Palestinians or their countries.”
This is the first time that American soldiers have been killed as a result of repeated attacks on American military bases in this region since the beginning of the war in Gaza.
According to US officials, there have been more than 150 attacks on US forces since October 7.
This map prepared by the Institute for the Study of War shows the American bases that were subjected to attacks in Iraq and Syria, most recently in Jordan, which resulted in casualties, some of them critical.
There are about 3,000 US troops in Jordan, and 2,500 in Iraq – and they are there at the invitation of the government of Iraq as part of a US-led coalition to prevent the return of ISIS, which still has a presence there.
There are also about 900 members of the US forces in Syria, to support their allies, the Syrian Democratic Forces, in the northeastern region of Syria against ISIS. The Syrian government opposes the presence of the United States in its country.
The United States also maintains several bases elsewhere in the Middle East, including three major air bases in the Gulf, and the port of Bahrain, which serves as headquarters for US Naval Forces Central Command and the US Fifth Fleet.
