Sony buys a company that improves video streaming through AI

Sony has announced the purchase of iSize, a British company that uses artificial intelligence systems to improve the quality of video broadcasts over the Internet.

The objective of its technology is to reduce the bitrate and improve quality, allowing streaming with a smaller amount of data, using AI to rescale the material to a higher quality.

According to Sony, “this acquisition provides SIE with significant experience in applying machine learning to video processing, which will benefit both our R&D efforts and our video and streaming services.”

The iSize website explains that the company offers bitrate savings, machine learning and energy efficiency in video broadcasting. They also talk about video processing to eliminate image artifacts using AI, and “live photorealistic generative technology for 2D and 3D avatars.”

Sony has not specified how it plans to use iSize technology, although all bets are on game streaming on PlayStation Plus Premium, movie streaming on the Sony Pictures Core app or even trailers on the PlayStation Store.
