Spain, candidate to host the Women’s Handball World Cup in 2029

MADRID, March 20 (.) –

The Royal Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM) confirmed this Wednesday that it has presented to the International Federation (IHF) a candidacy to host the Women’s World Cup in 2029, eight years after having already hosted this event.

“The president of the RFEBM, Francisco Blázquez, continues to take steps to consolidate the ambitious project of attracting events of global relevance to our country, and in this case, Spanish handball has presented the candidacy to host the 2029 IHF Women’s World Championship,” the organization indicated in a statement.

The federation highlighted “the praise” received “for the neat organization” of the 2021 World Cup, which was held in Granollers (Barcelona), Castellón, Llíria (Valencia) and Torrrevieja (Alicante), and “the atmosphere created” in the country , “despite the conditions of being held in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic” as key reasons why Blázque has once again decided to host “an event of such importance, understanding that it is a fundamental tool for the promotion of women’s handball.”

After opening the bidding process, the IHF announced last Friday, March 1, that it accepted the Spanish candidacy, which must be presented on April 16 at the headquarters of the French Handball Federation in Créteil, in an event framed in the draw for composition of the groups of the Paris 2024 Olympic Tournament.

At this meeting, the countries that will definitively host the editions of the men’s and women’s World Cups in 2029 and 2031 will be chosen. In the case of Spain, the candidacy presented by the RFEBM to the IHF is the only one, so it has all the signs of get elected. In addition, the joint candidacies of Czechia and Poland (Women’s World Cup 2031); from Denmark, Iceland and Norway (Men’s World Cups 2029 and 2031); and from France and Germany (Men’s World Cups 2029 and 2031) will also know their fate.

The final stretch will revolve around the presentation of the candidacy before the IHF Council and, at the end of the presentation session, the members will vote on the award of each of the championships, making their resolution public, after the announcement of the final decision to the requesting countries.

In the order of presentations established by the IHF, first place will be for the Spanish candidacy, which, if chosen, will host a World Championship in this sport for the third time, since it also did so in 2013 at the men’s level, and a year after hosting the European Championship, in a joint project with Portugal and Switzerland.
