More of forty years laterMcCartney and Starr have joined their talents once again to complete this iconic song, which will be released in 2023.
It is important to highlight that John Lennon had recorded a home demo of “Now and Then” in New York in the late 1970s., shortly before his tragic death in 1980. Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, gave the tape of this valuable recording to Paul McCartney, labeling it with a single “For Paul.” In fact, the demos of “Free As a Bird” and “Real Love” also emerged from these recordings, which his bandmates released in the 1990s.

However, “Now And Then” could not see the light of day at that time, as The technology of the time did not allow the voice and the piano to be separated of Lennon appropriately. The song had to be discarded, remaining forgotten for many years.
In 2021, hope resurfaced thanks to the premiere of the docuseries The Beatles: Get Back. Director Peter Jackson and his team achieved an extraordinary technological advance by demixing the mono soundtrack of the original film, managing to isolate the instruments from the band members’ voices.
This same technique was applied to Lennon’s old demo, finally allowing his voice to be separated from the piano. This marked an important milestone that enabled McCartney and Starr complete the song in 2022. McCartney couldn’t help but be moved when he heard John’s voice with crystal clarity, and expressed:
“There it was, it was John’s crystal clear voice. It’s very emotional and we all touch on it. “It’s a genuine Beatles recording.”
