The defense of the man convicted of killing his mother in Oroso (A Coruña) alleges lack of evidence and requests his acquittal

The defense of the man tried for strangling his mother and setting fire to the family home in Oroso (A Coruña), in June 2021, has alleged a lack of evidence to request his acquittal, in the appeal hearing held in the Superior Court of Xustiza de Galicia (TSXG) after the appeal presented for the sentence of his client to 22 and a half years in prison. Faced with this, the Prosecutor’s Office has requested that the sentence handed down by the first section of the Provincial Court of A Coruña based on the jury’s verdict be fully ratified and which, subsequently, the defense appealed to the Galician high court. The man’s lawyer has alleged violation of the presumption of innocence and has also maintained that “there is not enough evidence.” In any case, he has limited those that led to the conviction of his client to “indictive evidence.” “They are not reinforced enough to condemn him,” he added. FACTS In the sentencing, it was considered proven that the convicted man took advantage of the fact that his mother was in bed to suffocate her using a piece of clothing, “probably a T-shirt, which he rolled around her neck and squeezed, for a few minutes, until causing her death.” “After ending the life of his mother, he proceeded to set fire to the home.” The flames spread through the house “and could spread to the rest of the floors of the building.” Based on this, the man was found guilty of a crime of murder, for which he was sentenced to 17 years in prison, and of a crime of arson with risk to the life or physical integrity of people, with a sentence of five years and six months.
