MADRID, Nov 29. (.) –
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) indicated this Wednesday the region of the French Alps and the city of Salt Lake City (Utah, United States) as its preferred venues to host, respectively, the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. .
The IOC Executive Board, following a recommendation from its Future Host Commission, invited the French Olympic Committee (CNOSF) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOPC) to attend its so-called ‘Specific Dialogues’, a series of meetings that in July 2024 will be held within the framework of the 142nd IOC Session in Paris (France).
“The IOC will now begin more detailed discussions with the preferred hosts, led by their National Olympic Committees, with the aim of awarding both editions,” the IOC said on its website. Likewise, the Executive Board granted the Switzerland 203x project a “special status” by inviting it to the so-called ‘Privileged Dialogue’, which will last until the end of 2027 and after which the venue for the 2038 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be decided.
The Future Host Commission met earlier this month in Lausanne, Switzerland, where the National Olympic Committees of parties interested in hosting the Winter Games presented their projects. “The Commission based its consensual decision on these presentations and on the viability assessments that the IOC had carried out on each party,” the press release stated about its “periodic meetings and workshops,” along with “the exchange of information.”
In line with the Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC took into account information from third-party sources, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and numerous UN agencies. , including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Independent opinion polls commissioned by the IOC itself were also considered.
“In total, the Future Host Commission has evaluated four projects. Apart from the French Alps, Salt Lake City-Utah and Switzerland 203x, there was also the Swedish project, which presented an impressive vision to organize the most sustainable Games in history, but it did not have all the necessary elements to carry it out at this stage,” the IOC note stressed.
COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY PRINCIPLES
Karl Stoss, chairman of the Future Host Commission for the Winter Games, said its members “were deeply impressed by the technical excellence of all the projects, the passion for Olympic winter sports and the commitment to the sustainability principles of the Olympic Agenda 2020+5”.
“What really stood out about the French Alps and Salt Lake City-Utah projects was their vision for the athlete experience, their alignment with regional and national socioeconomic development plans, and their strong support from the public and at all levels of government,” commented the president of the Future Host Commission.
“The Commission strongly considered that other stakeholders would benefit from more time to optimize the athletes’ experience at their future Games and continue to build on their burgeoning bases of public and political support,” Stoss added.
“Switzerland 203x has great potential, with its project aligned with the Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and the principles of sustainability, cost reduction, environmental protection and legacy,” concluded Stoss.
