The Mexican restaurants that received a Michelin star for the first time

Since 1900, the Michelin Guide of France became known for the suggestions it issued to motorists; but it quickly positioned itself in 1920, when it added restaurants to its lists and it was there that it gained notoriety and awakened the ambition of chefs around the world.

The Michelin Guide owes its name to the tire brand, which gave away advertising guides to all vehicle owners and even to travelers and passers-by.

And, although at first only the best of French cuisine was awarded, the Guide gained international notoriety; and began issuing awards to other countries. And, although there has been exquisite gastronomy in Mexico since time immemorial, the award has awarded some restaurants in the Aztec country for the first time.

In 2024, the establishments that received a Michelin star for the first time were the following:

  • Pot Yeast (Oaxaca)
  • Em (Mexico City)
  • Sud777 (Mexico City)
  • Le Cirque (Riviera Maya)
  • Ha’ (Riviera Maya)
  • Animalón (Guadalupe Valley)
  • Stone Shells (Tecate)
  • Common Corner (Mexico City)
  • Pangea (Monterrey)
  • Koli Cuisine of Origin (Monterrey)
  • The Dancers Oaxaca (Oaxaca)
  • Rosetta (Mexico City)
  • Signature Cuisine Los Cabos (Cabo San Lucas)
  • Damiana (Guadalupe Valley)
  • Signature Cuisine (Riviera Maya)
  • Taquería El Califa de León (Mexico City)

While the only two Mexican restaurants that were established as those with two Michelin stars were:

  • Quintonil (Mexico City)
  • Pujol (Mexico City)

One of the establishments that earned a Michelin star was the popular taqueria El Califa de León, located in the San Rafael neighborhood, in the heart of Mexico City. The gaonera taco would have been invented there, according to its founder, Javier Plascencia.

It is worth mentioning that, in 2010, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) classified Mexican cuisine as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It was from that moment that many people understood the importance and deliciousness of tacos, moles, broths, as well as the peculiarity of certain animal proteins such as chicken, fish and meat.
