‘The Nun 2’ narrowly beats ‘A Haunting in Venice’ at US box office

NEW YORK (AP) — “The Nun 2” and “A Haunting in Venice” virtually tied for first place at the U.S. and Canadian box office over the weekend, with the horror sequel slightly ahead of the mystery of Hercule Poirot, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

In its second weekend in theaters, Warner Bros.’ “The Nun 2,” a sequel to the lucrative “Conjuring” franchise, grossed $14.7 million. If the numbers hold up, “The Nun 2” (with $56.5 million in total and $158.8 million worldwide) will occupy first place at the box office for the second consecutive week.

Closely followed by “A Haunting in Venice”, the third adaptation of Agatha Christie by Kenneth Branagh after the film “Murder on the Orient Express”, from 2017, and “Death on the Nile”, from 2022. It grossed 14.5 million dollars in its opening weekend.

Final box office figures will be published on Monday.

Following the success of “Murder on the Orient Express,” with $352.8 million worldwide against a production budget of $55 million, and the less stellar success of “Death on the Nile,” with $137.3 million against a With a budget of 90 million, the weak beginning of “A Haunting in Venice” may have been the death knell for Branagh’s detective.

The 20th Century Studios film, distributed by Walt Disney Co., grossed $22.7 million internationally, which cost less than its predecessor, with a production budget of about $60 million.

“The Equalizer 3,” starring Denzel Washington, fell to third place with $7.2 million, which, in three weeks, has grossed $73.7 million domestically and $132.4 million worldwide. Fourth place went to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” with $4.7 million in its second weekend of release. This film has grossed 18.5 million dollars domestically.
