This is the list of the happiest countries in the world, according to a study

For the UN (United Nations Organization), happiness is a fundamental goal. The General Assembly of said organization recognizes the same objective and, over the years, has advocated for a “more inclusive, equitable and balanced” approach for the well-being of all peoples.

The World Happiness Report 2024 was published this March 20, and revealed how happiness – through the defense of human rights – benefits world governments and other international organizations.

The publication of the World Report coincides with the UN International Day of Happiness, the same organization that urges “all people of any age, as well as all classrooms, companies and governments, to join the celebration.”

In 2012, the UN established that this date would be celebrated with the objective of “recognizing the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal aspirations of human beings.” This would have arisen after Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom in South Asia, recognized happiness since 1970 as a relevant factor that affects national income and affects –positively or negatively as the case may be– the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). .

In this sense, the United Nations has dedicated itself to evaluating the countries of the world and listing those that keep their citizens happy, thanks to development policies, housing, employment, health, culture and other leisure activities:

  • Finland
  • Denmark
  • Iceland
  • Sweden
  • Israel
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Luxembourg
  • Swiss
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Costa Rica
  • Kuwait
  • Austria
  • Canada
  • Belgium
  • Ireland
  • Czech Republic
  • Lithuania
  • United Kingdom

Only after Costa Rica, Mexico is crowned as one of the best evaluated countries on said list, occupying position 25; followed by Uruguay (26); El Salvador (33); Chile (38); Panama (39); Guatemala (42); Nicaragua (43); Brazil (44); Argentina (48); Paraguay (57); Honduras (61); Peru (68); Dominican Republic (69); Bolivia (73); Ecuador (74); Colombia (78); and Venezuela (79).

The case of the USA is relevant, as it ranks 23rd; In the last edition it was ranked 15th. Germany also dropped several places, and this year it was ranked 24th.

Some other countries that were positioned as the favorites on the list, such as Spain, have seen their position decline. This nation was ranked 24th in 2021; in 2022, the 29th; in 2023, 32; and now, in 2024, it dropped to 36th place.

The final countries on the list are Afghanistan (143); Lebanon (142); Lesotho (141); Sierra Leone (140); Democratic Republic of the Congo (139); Zimbabwe (138); Botswana (137); Malawi (136); Eswatin (135); and Zambia (134).

According to the document, the happiest people in the world are boomersthat is, those born before 1965. It is notable that the most recent generations, born after 1980 (millennials and Generation Z), are not the most satisfied in their lives.
