Tower of Fantasy has reached another important milestone: After the action RPG started in China in 2021 and made the leap to the West in autumn 2022, it has also been available since August 2023 PlayStation 4 and 5 available. You don’t have to hesitate to take a look at it, whether on console, PC or Android, because Tower of Fantasy is Free to play. Stop, stop, don’t move on straight away, free-to-play doesn’t always mean the highest quality, but the exceptions prove the rule and Tower of Fantasy is one of those exceptions. Give it a chance, especially since the new 3.4 update brings a lot of new content to the game.
What is Tower of Fantasy?
Shared world action RPG is the short summary of the situation. You have a massive open world divided into a whole bunch of large regions, each of which is its own biome with its own look, inhabitants, quests and so on. This world offers you a lot to explore.
What exactly this world is, well, most likely science fiction, despite the fantasy in the name. In the distant future, humanity found a new planet to colonize, named it Aida, and everything went well. Things went even better when they got the radioactive material Omnium discovered on a nearby comet and with Omnium endless possibilities. Unfortunately, Omnium also had a few drawbacks, such as being incredibly explosive if not handled with caution. After the first Tower of Fantasy was built, a catastrophe occurs, Aida is badly hit and large parts of the population are wiped out.
The survivors split into two factions: Hyrkos, an association of scientists, keep their part of the population safe from the radiation of the omnium under special protective shields while they continue to research and use it. On the other side are the Heirs of Aida want to get rid of the omnium once and for all. This is the rough starting point into which you, as a player with a fresh character, are thrown. All the good things are waiting for you. An extensive one Storyline, PvE, PvP, co-op, missions, raids, events, everything there. And that’s all before we get to the new content in 3.4: Butterfly in the Abyss.
The Butterfly in the Abyss: 3.4 is here
Because important updates deserve a fancy name, that is Tower of Fantasy 3.4 not just 3.4, but Butterfly in the Abyss. The name not only sounds lyrical, but also has a meaning. But what exactly is best for you to find out for yourself, because the completely soundtracked story of Tower of Fantasy has many twists and turns and dramatic moments. You don’t want to give any spoilers. This much can be said: Ji Yu’s investigation into the Hendeca disaster continues as you try to save Area 9 from the machinations of a corrupt Nan Yin.
But where the story leads in 3.4 can already be mentioned: So far the icy region of Swamp City something very mysterious, not least because large areas were not yet accessible to players. That is now changing and Swamp City welcomes you in its entirety. Well, as welcome as an icy wilderness of high mountain passes, deep gorges and valleys, dangerous – albeit beautiful – caves and populated by lots of monsters and even dragons can make you. In other words, adventurers of all kinds have come to the right place in Swamp City.
Then, as they delve deeper into Swamp City, they come across new places like this Pass from Ao, famous for its many mines. The Soul Bridge They should then tread carefully so as not to disturb the souls of the dead here, who are being mourned by their surviving relatives. Even further into the lands of Swamp City there are enchanting places like this Mourning Cave, Amber Snow Gorge with crystal clear ice lakes and many more wonders. All of this alone is worth the trip.
New bosses are waiting in Swamp City
But maybe you come to the land of Swamptown in search of real loot. Well, then you’ll be up and running with Tower of Fantasy 3.4: Butterfly in the Abyss Meet Nan Yin, the former leader of the Alabaster Guard. Now as a servant of darkness, she can boast a host of new skills. For example, you don’t need to use normal attacks at all; that simply doesn’t work for someone who has the combined powers of three high-ranking Crystamaxes.
She has company too. Merabelle is a fantastic creature, half human, half fish and entirely servant of darkness. When at rest, the Merabelle presents itself as a statue of mercury. When in motion, the creature melts and even moves through ice. Imagine the T-1000 if it had decided to be a mermaid, wielding a massive halberd that was part of the body.
As if that wasn’t enough, it also dives in Rockwings on. No, not the cute little dragon bat that you don’t actually want to attack because it’s way too cute. No, that would be a small wing. The huge dragon beast behind it, darkening the sky, that’s a Rockwing. Just what you need when scrambling around icy rocky passes: death from above in the form of a giant lizard.
A new simulacrum for new co-op gameplay
To continue with the ice theme, which fits wonderfully with the season, of course there is also a new simulacrum in Tower of Fantasy 3.4: Butterfly in the Abyss and of course it is Nan Yin. After you’ve overcome all of their impressive powers, you can add them to your collection and let these powers work for you. For example, her flute art, with which she can summon the dead and make them fight.
You’ll also need tricks like these when you jump into the new co-op mode. Tower of Fantasy 3.4: Butterfly in the Abyss offers with the Enforcement field some important innovations in terms of gameplay with friends. To fight the battlefield final boss Xingtian To have a chance, you have to work together with other players to quickly get enough resources and build fortifications. If you don’t do this, Xingtian will sweep you off the battlefield. But if you manage to do it, there are decent rewards waiting for you, as you would expect from such a boss.
If you’d rather relax a little afterwards, then take a look at the mini-games Season of Golden Gratitude over. For Thanksgiving, which is particularly important in the USA, you will find a number of activities that are not necessarily part of Tower of Fantasy 3.4: Butterfly in the Abyss, but a few extra nuclei, vouchers and other rewards are never a bad idea.
