USA freezes anti-immigrant law

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday indefinitely extended its blockade of a Texas law that would give police broad authority to detain migrants suspected of having entered the country illegally, resolving the legal battle it sparked over the powers in immigration matters.

The one-page order signed by Justice Samuel Alito indefinitely bars Texas from enforcing a sweeping immigration law that was scheduled to take effect this month. The wording of the order suggests that the court will take additional action, but it is unknown when.

It is the second time that Alito has extended the suspension of the law – known as Senate Bill 4 or SB4, for its initials in English – which the Justice Department argues usurps the powers of the federal government in immigration matters.
