Vivek Ramaswamy on H-1B ViSA- Apart from Donald Trump, the most talked about name for the US presidential election is that of Indian-origin businessman Vivek Ramaswamy. Vivek Ramaswamy is continuously moving towards winning the race for the White House. Trump supporters are also seeing him as the upcoming Vice President. Ramaswami, meanwhile, called the H-1B visa program “indentured labor.” He has vowed to “abolish” or replace this lottery-based system. Whereas, he himself has used it 29 times.
H-1B visa is the most awaited and much talked about program among Indian IT professionals. This visa is for non-immigrants who work as foreign employees in US companies. This visa program allows employment in specialized occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. Technology companies depend on it to hire thousands of employees every year from countries like India and China.
Ramaswamy himself has used this visa program 29 times. From 2018 to 2023, US Citizenship and Immigration Services approved 29 applications from Ramaswamy’s former company, Roivant Sciences, to hire workers under H-1B visas. Nevertheless, Ramaswamy describes the H-1B system as a very poor program.
Ramaswami’s argument
Ramaswamy argues, “The lottery system needs to be replaced by the existing meritocratic entry. This is a form of ‘indentured’ slavery that only benefits the company that sponsored the H-1B immigrant. I will finish it. He said the US needs to end chain-based migration. Said “People who come as family members are not qualified immigrants who make skill-based contributions to this country.”
It is noteworthy that according to the existing law, there is also a provision to double the number of H-1B visas available annually from 65,000 to 130,000, so that American companies, including in critical technology sectors, can be allowed to bring the best talent from around the world to the country. Currently, about three-quarters of H-1B visas are granted to Indian professionals.
what is indentured labor
The British, who came in the seventeenth century, had made common Indians dependent on even a single loaf of bread. Then they started sending people abroad on the condition of slavery. These laborers were called indentured servants.
Ramaswami popular among Trump supporters
Ramaswamy has become a very popular face among the US presidential candidates. A few days ago, in the survey, Ramaswamy was preferred among the candidates after Donald Trump. Ramaswamy himself is a Trump supporter. Therefore, Trump’s common supporters see him as the Vice President in Trump’s possible second term. Trump himself has praised Ramaswamy on many occasions.
