Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Sophie Turner after four years of marriage.
The couple issued a joint statement on Wednesday (September 6), telling fans that they decided by mutual agreement to “amicably” end their marriage.
“After four years of a wonderful marriage, we mutually decided to end our marriage amicably,” reads the statement, which was posted Wednesday on Jonas and Turner’s respective Instagram accounts.
“There are many speculative narratives as to why, but the truth is that it is a joint decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our privacy wishes for ourselves and our daughters.”
The Jonas Brothers singer, 34, filed a lawsuit for dissolution of marriage in Miami Dade County, Florida on Tuesday (September 5). According to documents obtained by Todaythe petition states that “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.”
A source told TMZ Tuesday that a difference in lifestyles, including Turner’s apparent affinity for “partying,” had been a reason behind Jonas’ decision.
“Turner likes to party, Jonas likes to stay home. They have very different lifestyles,” they say.
Turner and Jonas began dating in 2016 and married in 2019, when Turner was 23 and Jonas was 29. They welcomed their first daughter, three-year-old Willa, in July 2020 and a second, whose name they have not announced. , in 2022.
Jonas’ lawsuit claims that although his two daughters have been primarily living with him, he wants “shared parental responsibility” following the separation.
“It is in the best interest of the minor daughters for the parties to share parental responsibility,” the lawsuit states, according to Today.
On the other hand, an interview with Turner resurfaced to Elle UK after the news of the divorce. In the interview, published in May 2022, the 27-year-old spoke of her desire to return to the United Kingdom for her mental health.

“I miss England a lot,” he told the publication. “The people, the attitude, everything. I’m slowly dragging my husband back. I love living in the United States, but for my mental health, I have to be with my friends and family. And also for my daughter: I would love for her to have the education and school life that I was lucky to have.”
“England would ideally be the final destination, but Joe will probably have to be convinced!” he added.
In addition to the joint custody petition, the document also indicated that Jonas and Turner had a prenuptial agreement in place. Jonas retained the services of Tom Sasser, the famous lawyer who handled the divorce from Tiger Woods.
After the couple discussed their divorce, sources told TMZ that Jonas “had access to a Ring surveillance camera,” where he saw Turner “saying or doing something” that made him realize their marriage was not working.

Divorce rumors surfaced last week. However, Jonas appeared to dispel the divorce rumors by sharing two photos on Instagram in which he visibly displayed his wedding ring.
In one of the images he was with his brothers Nick and Kevin while wishing his followers a “Happy Labor Day weekend.”
In another image, shared just a few hours before Today revealed that he had obtained court documents, Jonas posted a black and white photo without a caption with his wedding ring clearly visible.
Turner’s last Instagram post was on August 14, and she was kissing Jonas’s hand.
Representatives for Turner have declined to comment on the matter, while representatives for Jonas have not responded to a request for comment from The Independent.
